2000 Martin Margiela Painted Raincoat
This is a very rare, hand made, one of a kind work of art by Martin Margiela circa 1999 - 2000. As described in a press release at the time describing the collection "Line 0 - a series of garments reworked by hand (Artisan production): A series of vintage men’s garments hand painted in silver – rain coat, tailored jacket, jeans and jeans jacket." This is an example of the rain coat. Pieces from this collection are highly coveted and very sought after by collectors. Examples of this collection were displayed at the Maison Margiela "20" The Exhibition, a retrospective of his 20 years of innovation and cutting edge style as shown in the last photo below.
This was created from a plain, black, plaid lined over coat. The coat was laid flat, then painted with silver gray paint, the areas that were folded or covered remain black, like a shadow. As you can see in the last photo from the museum exhibit, the paint colors varied, some more silver, some more gray.. this one is on the gray side, but it definitely has a metallic shimmer. The paint was applied haphazardly so some of the black shows through giving it a weathered look.
The coat is totally unisex. There is no belt, but I tied it with a vintage tie in the 3rd photo and it looked fabulous as well (tie not included). I photographed the coat with the sleeves cuffed, but it can be worn down as the silver paint goes all the way to the end.
The coat is in excellent condition.
There is no size, but if fits a woman's Medium to Large (probably a S-M men's)
