Adrian, Gilbert

Most vintage collectors know the name Adrian. Nearly all will know Gilbert Adrian, but not many will recognize the man named Adrian Adolph Greenberg as the creator of some of the most wonderful dresses in Hollywood. He was born in Connecticut to immigrant Jewish parents. He studied in New York, then Paris where he was hired by Irving Berlin to design costumes. From that job he was hired by Cecil B DeMille who eventually brought him to Hollywood and to MGM where he prospered, designing gowns for over 200 films. He dressed all the great starlets of the 1920s & 1930s including Crawford, Hepburn and Garbo. His work in The Women (1939) is a standout in my mind, as well as the dresses for The Philadelphia Story and the Wizard of Oz. He left MGM in 1941 to start his own couture house, catering to the rich and fabulous. He passed on in 1959 at the age of 56.
