It has often been said that Sophie Gimbel's designs were ahead of their time, as is evident in this fabulous dress. Though it was produced in the early 1960s, it looks like it could have been designed this year. Of course, the quality of the fabric and construction tells you right away it is not a modern dress because nobody makes couture like this these days. The dress is made from a rich, heavy silk printed in the most wonderful, over-sized tulip pattern. It is really quite abstract and you have to study it to notice the tulips but even at a glance it has a very floral look. The design of the dress is incredible. If you are a student of fashion, pay attention!! I just counted 8 distinct panels of fabric in the front of the dress where the patterns were laid to off-set one another. The effect is dazzling, the lines are incredible, with angles that point to the center, creating a subtle, slimming effect. Not to overdo it, she made the back simple with just 2 panels of fabric. The neckline was over-cut and weighted to produce a loose, slouchy effect. The rest of the dress is a semi-fitted sheath. It is lined in black silk. This dress is a true work of art!
