This is a very unusual blouse. The fabric is cream colored silk decorated with hand embroidery of red, blue, olive green, white and black. The stitching is very fine, I believe the threads used are silk. Generally, when you see this type of embroidery it is on a peasant style blouse or dress, but this piece is quite tailored, with buttons down the front and darts in the front and back. Even the cuffs have buttons. I have noticed that the embroidery was applied to the fabric prior to the construction of the blouse, suggesting perhaps the embroidered fabric was imported to America or France and then cut and sewn to the style of the time. The tailoring of the blouse was top quality, with hand sewn button holes and very fine "french seams", and hand sewn overcast edges.

condition: excellent. there is a series of numbers written in pencil at the side seam. this may have been an inventory number, perhaps for a collection, or this could have been a sample. there are also a series of numbers embroidered in white thread on the inside front as well.
