1950s Rosser Barcelona Velvet Dress
Feast your eyes on a dress of superb design done in ultra luxurious black silk velvet. Unless you are really into Spanish couture, you may not recognize the Rosser label, but believe me, you will want to know about Roser Pujol Canamasses! She opened her own couture house in Barcelona in the late 1940s and soon became as renowned as Balenciaga and Rodriguez for her fashions. It was even said the great Balenciaga himself was a fan of her work, though it is rumored she stole his best tailor by offering nearly double his wages. It was also said she became very friendly with Jacques Fath and Valentino as well. This creation is incredible. Ironically I purchased it from a woman (in Rome) who sold me a very fine Fath as well. It is a very interesting and unique cut, with a side zipper, stays at the bust and padded shoulders, with that gorgeous draped belt detail that acts like a peplum, drawing the eye to the slim waist and full hips. It is angular, yet feminine. It was said Roser Pujol strove to show off the female figure, and this dress is a stunning example of this art. Her early pieces are almost never found, and I am beyond thrilled to finally have one available on SwankVintage.
