1950s Pierre Balmain Couture Dress & Jacket Ensemble
This adorable ensemble is such a find! Not only is it a divine example of late 1950s Parisian haute couture, but also it is a more generous size, made for a curvy woman. The fabric of the dress is a rich silk taffeta of chocolate brown. The cut is cut to the body, to reveal the natural contours of the body. I love the draped bodice and the elaborate gathers in the back. The back closes with a zipper, then there are bits of folded taffeta that cross over, secured with hooks to give the dress a flawless look. The bodice is so beautiful, it seems a shame to cover it with the matching jacket of brown taffeta, and bright pink satin. The jacket is reversible, and looks great both ways. I love the structural element of the shoulders, which is seen on both the brown and the pink sides. The skirt of the dress is also lined in the same pink, though it is not seen, it may do a peek a boo now and again. The dress had a built in corset in the bodice (can be removed).
The condition of both pieces is excellent.
The hem of the skirt appears to have been raised about 2 1/2" which can be put down to the original length if desired.
No size, fits like a modern 8-10
The jacket is a kimono cut worn loose and open
side to size is 70"
