This coat was created by Jean Louis Berthault in the 1950s. This was a time when he was the toast of Hollywood, designing costumes at Columbia Pictures for Rita Hayworth, Claudette Colbert, Deborah Kerr, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, and Betty Grable to name a few. Apparently he also produced some ready to wear that sold in high end shops, like this one that sold in D.C.'s Julius Garfinckel & Co, which eventually became Garfinkles. The coat is made of black silk faile. It kind of brings to mind the clerical coats Balenciaga was doing, with the little stand up collar and the pleats across the back. The buttons are carved black and shiny. They may possibly be Bakelite as they have a nice sound when tapped. The large patch pockets are all hand sewn. They are made to look like flap pockets, but actually the opening is in the side so your hand just slides in. Its a very fun and creative touch. The coat is light weight, and lined in silk taffeta.

This coat is in excellent condition.
