When I first laid eyes on this dress, I thought early YSL! The colors, the out there dotted print, the weight and feel of the fabric and, of course the iconic cut all pointed to YSL, but no label. I sat with it a bit and decided to see if there was anything in the construction that would point it towards being unlabeled YSL couture, and indeed, there is quite a bit of couture tailoring but while exploring the seams I found on the selvage edge of the fabric the fabric was signed Yves Saint Laurent. Eureka!! A wonderful blogger named Dustin at Make Mine Vogue (a blog about "An Exploration into the World of Designer Sewing Paterns") uncovered a wealth of information about the Yves Saint Laurent fabric boutiques in the late 1960s where one could purchase genuine YSL fabric and patterns to make, or have made dresses, suits and the like (click here to read the blog). After reading all about the fabric boutiques one could conclude that this was one such dress, but given that it was extremely well made, I highly doubt it was a make it yourself dress and that it was indeed a YSL couture piece or it was made for a customer by a high end dressmaker following the YSL pattern, using the YSL fabric.
As I mentioned before, the fabric is dreamy. Its a stretchy jersey of either a very high quality cotton, or a cotton/silk blend as it has wonderful sheen. It is lined in blue silk. The skirt portion is a full circle that drifts down from the waist seam in effortless, graceful folds. The bodice is fitted, closing with three green plastic and metal buttons that echo the circles of the pattern. The neckline has gathers on either side creating a slight sweetheart neckline. The dress comes with a matching belt.
