1970s Madame Gres Wool Cape
$ 0.00
Alix Gres resisted producing ready to wear for the first 50 some years of her career. In 1980 she introduced the Gres Boutique as ready to wear which, by todays standards is more like deimi couture. It enabled the company to exist for another few years.
This rare beauty is simply divine. It is made from a divine wool that is heavy enough to keep you warm, but light enough to wear it effortlessly. The colors stipes of marron, burgundy and plum were placed just so to create the wonderful chevron pattern. I love how she put the lines together so the darkest ones match up, but the thinner ones are a bit offset so it tricks the eye a little. The inside facing of the wool is solid crimson.
The cape is really beautifully made. Notice how the shoulders fit perfectly, like a coat. Thats due to a seam inset across the shoulders. The sides have long slits, open to the hem for freedom of arm movement, and dramatic swishes of the front panels. There are also huge patch pockets sewn at a diagnal so you hands will slip in effortlessly.
