1960s Sybil Connolly Tweed Suit

$ 0.00
This suit is definitely couture, but it is Irish couture which makes it quite unique. The bicolor Donegal Tweed is sublime. It looks teal until you get close then you see its really royal blue and spring green yarns woven together. It was, of course, hand woven and shows the unique texture you can only get from handcrafted fabric. It is mid weight and has a wonderful hand.
This is a three piece suit consisting of a jacket, skirt and shell top. The skirt is a sweet pencil style. There are 2 zippers, one on the front of each hip, and hook & eye closures along the grosgrain ribbon that lines the waistband. The rest of the skirt is lined in green silk. The shell is also lined in the green silk and has a long zipper that fully opens down the back. It is wonderfully tailored so you could wear just the skirt and shell alone and it would be perfectly wonderful. The jacket however is simply divine. The boxy cut is very much like what I have seen in jackets by Balenciaga. Sybil makes it unique by placing the fabric covered buttons just off to the left. The shoulder seam is dropped to armpit level and the long tailed collar crosses over itself and can be worn flipped up if desired. the jacket is also fully lined in green silk.
Sybil Connolly pieces were very exclusive back in the day, sold to socialites and movie stars. She never went mainstream so her pieces are quite rare. This unique gem is no only a glorious example of her work with tweed, but its also very wearable and lovely.
