This dress is so sharp... its right on the cutting edge of Parisian chic in the 1960s. Hubert de Givenchy introduced his "Chemise Dress" in 1957. Also known as the Sack dress, it soon became Givenchy's signature look.
This glorious example is made from the finest wool jersey, printed in a jet black and vibrant fuchsia square mesh pattern. With this dress, Hubert played with the use of pattern to add another dimension to this style dress. Notice the patch pockets were painstakingly matched perfectly to the dress, how the sleeves were attached to also be perfectly aligned with the pattern of the dress, how the seam down the back (where the metal zipper is) slightly elongates the black squares resulting in a bit of an op-art effect, and how the side seams were arranged to accentuate the figure, thus taking a the sack dress and giving the illusion of being fitted.
The dress is a shining example of the artistry of a master of couture.
