1940s Philip Mangone Suit

$ 325.00

Philip Mangone was quite a remarkable guy. He was a 6th generation tailor, the son of an Italian immigrant, the started in the trade at the age of 17. Not only was he was one of New York's most famous and desirable designers, but he was once arrested for smuggling (a Parisian handbag not mentioned on the customs), and also survived the Hindenburg disaster buy jumping out the window before it completely blew up!! His forte were suits and coats, and this is an amazing example of his mastery of the ladies's suit.

The fabric is a lovely, midnight blue silk/wool blend (I believe it to be). It is super fine and very rich feeling. The jacket is lined in silk. Notice the amazing notched detail at the collar and pocket flaps of the jacket, as well as the very fancy crystal bejeweled buttons. It is a beautifully tailored suit, with broad, slightly padded shoulders, a well nipped waist, and a nicely fitted pencil skirt.
