1970s Jon Shannon Dragon Dress
This is the third creation of Jon Shannon's that I have come across in my many years collecting and selling vintage. Each piece is unique and thrilling.
This magnificent dress, like that others I have sold, seems to have been made entirely from vintage fabrics. The jacquard with the wide aspen leaf pattern seems to be Japanese, the central silk appears to be Chinese. You will also find wide bands of fine lace near the shoulders, and bands of silk faille of robins egg blue and black down the sleeves. The embroidered dragon at the bottom of the dress has 5 claws, which was only allowed on robes made for the Emperor while the 4-clawed and 3-clawed dragons were assigned to the commoners. This dragon was embroidered in metallic gold while the rest of the design was embroidered in silk.
As you can see, the dress was beautifully made, and expertly styled.
